I never thought I would move to Central Florida once retired. I had always dreamed of living somewhere in upstate New York, most likely the Catskills. However, reality set in two winters ago when I was still living on Long Island. That winter was brutal and I knew I couldn’t stand another one. I certainly wasn’t going to move north. Instead, I gave in and did what every other retiree on the east coast seems to do. I moved to Florida.

I didn’t move to just any city in Florida. I research Central Florida and decided to move to Merritt Island Florida, which is right outside of Melbourne Florida. I had heard that available Merritt Island real estate was difficult to find due to the high demand. I did have difficulty at first, but my perseverance paid off. I eventually found my dream home, and now I couldn’t possibly be happier.

I guess I should consider myself lucky that my kids and grandkids live nearby in Boca Raton. They visit about once per month. When they visit, the first place we go is the Brevard Zoo, which has over 500 exotic animals. My two grandkids love feeding the giraffes more than anything else, but they also enjoy kayaking, paddle-boating and seeing the rhinos. I’m trying to get them to go on the Treetop Trek, but they seem to fear the zip-line. Maybe they’ll be into it in a few years. I at least got them to go on the Canopy Walk, which they loved, especially walking overhead of the monkeys and leopards.

When my kids and grandkids aren’t around, my wife and I frequent the beach. Nothing could possibly be more relaxing, and the weather is almost always perfect. It’s even nice in the summer because a quick dip cools me off completely, which makes the experience wonderful. When we don’t go to the beach, my wife stays home and knits or cooks while I play golf.

This has truly ended up being the perfect lifestyle. If anyone I knew from up north were to ask me about my decision, I would tell them to look into Merritt Island real estate in a heartbeat. There is always something exciting to do, and when I feel like relaxing, I find myself with plenty of property and serenity.

Our next activity is to visit the Brevard County Farmers Market. That should be neat since at least 50 percent of the produce must be locally grown. I also can’t wait for my family to visit again because I just learned about Andretti Thrill Park, which is a go-kart racetrack that I know my grandchildren will absolutely love.
